Increase Compensation For Families Of Soldiers Who Die While Fighting
If reports are to be believed, then the government has decided to double the compensation of widows and families of soldiers, who died while fighting for the nation.According to a defence ministry circular issued recently, the ex-gratia lump-sum compensation to the next of kin of the deceased defence forces personnel has been revised in five major categories. The compensation is expected to increase upto Rs. 20 lakh for the families of the soldiers who die while directly taking part in border skirmishes and action against militants and extremists.“For deaths occurring due to accidents in the course of performance of duties, the compensation has been increased from the existing Rs 10 lakh to Rs 25 lakh,” the circular stated.Further, Defence minister Manohar Parrikar said that the government would enhance the areas and also types of actions in which the compensation would be given. The money for the compensation would be given from the welfare fund of the government, which in turn is separate from the other funds for soldiers. Not only just armed forces, the government has also included operations of the Navy and Air Force in the scheme who are involved in evacuating Indian nationals from foreign countries in times of crisis.Since the Narendra Modi-led NDA government came into power after victory in Lok Sabha elections in 2014, Indian forces have been deployed in Yemen, Saudi Arabia and other conflict-torn countries.
